In this case, the use of media in teaching learning process is needed to attract students’ attention and to make teaching learning activities more interesting and also effective. The use of media in teaching learning process is not a new thing. Many teachers know that media will be helpful. The use of media leads students to learn by doing. In other word we can say that in learning by doing process, students improve themselves from know nothing to know something, from know something to understand the concept. When students use media in learning then they will have the experience of learning and directly involve in the learning process. It makes what they have acquired will be saved in their long-term memory.
Nowadays, there are so many applications, webs, games, and any other technology that teacher can use as a learning media in the classroom. Media aim to support the teaching and learning process in the class. As preservice English teachers we need to be creative and select the interesting media for our students. And speaking is one of the skills that should be mastered by students. One of the media that we can use to teach speaking is Uno Stacko. Many people know how to play an Uno Stacko but not all of them know how to use it as a learning media in the classroom. Now in this article we will explain how an Uno Stacko being a media to develop English speaking skill.
UNO Stacko is one of the many variations of Uno card games. This game is a stack-block game tower that combines Uno and Jenga gameplay. There are two versions of the game: the previous version requires the use of a die, while the newer version eliminates the die, making the gameplay closer to Jenga. Uno Stacko is played in a style similar to Jenga. There are 51 Uno Stacko blocks in each set, usually made of plastic and are red, yellow, green, blue and purple. Previous versions of the game have blocks numbered 1 to 4, while newer versions add blocks containing the Draw Two, Reverse, and Skip symbols. The newer version also includes the Purple Wild block, which serves the same purpose as Wild and Wild Draw Four cards. However, unlike the Jenga blocks, they look like a lips beam, making the tower more unstable as the game progresses. Previous versions of Uno Stacko include a die, called Uno Cube, for example as follows: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, "Reserve", "Skip", and "Draw Two".
Through this media language learning course, We want to introduce Uno Stacko as media that is able to develop students’ speaking skill of describing word. Through this language learning media, we want to introduce Uno Stacko as a medium that is able to develop students' speaking skills in describing the words that have been determined by the teacher. The teacher will give an instruction to the students through a paper already pasted on the Uno Stacko beam, the teacher asks them to answer by speaking English. So students have to focus and concentrate on playing this Uno Stacko and they can also practice and add as much vocabulary as possible.
To implement Uno Stacko in the class there are several steps that teacher should apply in the class. Here some steps to implement Uno Stacko in the class:
1. Before Uno Stacko is played, the teacher has pasted the paper onto each beam that has been written or the instruction of the material to be conveyed by the students.
2. Any posts or instructions attached to each block may contain names such as mentioning the name of the animal, thing, fruit, place, work, etc. The material corresponds to the level of the student that the teacher is teaching.
3. Each level of the beam is different, the higher the beam the material written by the teacher is also a higher level.
4. Then, the player/student surrounds Uno Stacko that has been compiled. A number of players 2-10 people.
5. The first player takes the beam under or in the middle of the arrangement when it has taken the beam, the student sees the instruction material that has been posted on the block. Then the students must answer the instructions on the beam that has been provided after the students finished answering instructions, the beam is placed in the top position.
6. The second player must take the beam with the same COLOR or FIGURE of the first player without dropping the beam.
7. After that, the player looks at the instructions of the taken beam and responds to the instruction. Then, place the block in the top position.
8. The next player repeats the move.
9. Taking blocks may only wear 2 fingers.
10. The next players take turns doing the same thing until the collapse of the blocks. The losing player is the one who knocks down the block.
We believe using Uno Stacko as a medium in teaching speaking can develop students' speaking skills and also improve student motivation. By describing words, students can describe or reveal a specific person, place or object that the teacher has specified, the students can also practice concentration choosing the vocabulary they want to say and will add new vocabulary. So, we can conclude that media usage helps teachers get students' attention back and make learning more effective. Therefore, we recommend this media to all teachers who need media that is not only for playing games but also can be used as learning English in teaching and learning in the classroom.
